….And if I perish, I perish.

These are the words of courage spoken by a queen who as much as risked her life to fulfill her duty towards her people.

The Miss Universe of her times, who so comfortably left her competitors far behind with her ‘out of this world’ looks and style, who won the heart of the king with her charm and grace, and won the hearts of those who served her with her kind attitude and simplicity. This beauty was living every girls dream!!!! One favorable incident had turned her life in the right direction. The girl was thankful to the almighty for showering her with so many blessings. She must have thanked him for being the god who gives to all. Who but the simple Hadassah knew what it was like to be lavished with divine blessings, beyond count. For her, surely this god was a living God!!

What had led the Queen to risk her life?? Why was she not happy and content with the royal treatment that was being given to her? After all, she belonged to the kings household. Who could dare harm her? What made her identify with that section of the society which was threatened of being destroyed. The simple girl who shot to glory with being crowned as the ‘queen’ never even for an instant seems to have forgotten her roots and her origin. She identified with her people though she did not share their plight anymore. She decided to represent her people and do everything in her capacity to be a voice to the voiceless and misunderstood masses. She had played well her role of defending the cause of the innocent. She put the lives of all these unnumbered brothers and sisters of hers above her own life. She had used wisdom which is god given to act and speak in the right way in the right situations. She depended on God and prayer to achieve her objective in life.

This dynamic queen in history has taught us all a lesson through her brave life. Especially those of us who have come from a Dalit background but cannot identify with the wretched community anymore. For those amongst us who do not want to realize that the prosperity bestowed on us could be so that we might not be silent at such a time as this. For who knows, we occupy prominent places in the society for a time like this. For the deliverance for the oppressed would come from another place. But we would be failing in our duty to our community in particular and humanity in general. Though we who are informed and understand are a minority, the brave life of this beautiful Jewish girl reminds us about our calling in this critical time to dutifully perform our bit for the liberation of the oppressed. And in doing so….. if we perish, we perish.
